There has never been a better time to be a sports fan in Las Vegas — with the Las Vegas Raiders, the Vegas Golden Knights, the Las Vegas Aces, and ÐÔÊӽ紫ý’s own Rebels calling the city home, there are games and sporting events to attend nearly all year round.
But fans aren’t the only people benefiting from all the buzz. Vegas’s coming-of-age as a sports city also presents a rare opportunity for sports journalism students at ÐÔÊӽ紫ý’s Greenspun College of Urban Affairs to be a part of a burgeoning scene and capture history as it unfolds.
"This past year's Rebel Report staff set a new standard for covering sports in Las Vegas, particularly their coverage of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý sports. I'd see the students working in the newsroom, Avid lab, and studio in the mornings, midday, and evenings. They put in the work and produced some of the best shows Rebel Report has ever done," said Kevin Stoker, director of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý’s Hank Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies.
With so many games to cover each season, the young reporters at Rebel Report — ÐÔÊӽ紫ý’s student-run sports broadcast and social media outlet — are definitely getting their reps in. Dominic Lavoie, Jade Thomas, and Teneka Ash are three ÐÔÊӽ紫ý students who are making their mark in the world of sports journalism.
