Lawrence earned his Master of Public Health from Emory University. During his time there, he participated in a research study examining the association between Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WaSH), Mycobacterium leprae seropositivity, and undernutrition in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. As part of the study activation, he traveled to Ethiopia and spent two months in the country supporting the research initiative.
