Preventative Maintenance

Departments are responsible for maintaining their state-owned vehicles, including golf carts, and complying with all state safety regulations. To meet these requirements, departments must schedule preventive maintenance and regular inspections with VRS. The department offers several preventative maintenance packages. Costs will vary depending on vehicle and golf cart.

Safety Inspection / Smog Checks

Annual safety inspections help to:

  • Reduce accidents caused by mechanical failures such as worn breaks and tires or faulty steering
  • Ensure vehicles meet safety standards
  • Extend vehicle longevity by identifying small issues early
  • Prevent costly breakdowns
  • Maintain compliance with university and state requirements

Annual Inspections also include smog checks for vehicles that require them. During an inspection, a VRS team member will conduct exterior, interior, and operating inspections to evaluate the condition of the vehicle.

Inspection Details

  • Examine the exterior of the vehicle for visible damage or fluid leaks
  • Check the tire tread depth and look for wear or damage
  • Replace windshield wiper blades

  • Verify vehicle registration and insurance documents are accessible
  • Test safety belts to ensure they operate correctly
  • Check the condition of the spare tire and jack
  • Confirm the owner鈥檚 manual is in the vehicle

  • Test headlights, taillights, and brake lights for proper operation
  • Check the windshield wipers and horn to confirm they operate correctly
  • Test the parking brake and check the turn signal
  • Check heating and cooling system
  • Confirm engine oil is within the proper range
