For decades now, Republicans have wanted to implement voter ID laws at almost every level of government. And now, they may soon get what they鈥檝e long pushed for. The SAVE America Act was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives last week. The measure requires proof of citizenship to register to vote across the country.

An unusual clause in the North Dakota Constitution that limits the power of the courts kept the state鈥檚 near-total abortion ban from being struck down last month. Most state Supreme Courts require a majority vote to declare a law unconstitutional. But in North Dakota, it takes a supermajority 鈥 a vote of at least four justices 鈥 for the Supreme Court to strike down a law. That鈥檚 why the state鈥檚 2023 abortion law remains on the books even though three of five justices on the high court found it unconstitutionally vague under the North Dakota Constitution.
