Eugene Moehring
Moehring joined ÐÔÊӽ紫ý in 1976, coming to Las Vegas from New York. He taught at the university for 40 years, retiring in 2016 and in that time wrote the book on ÐÔÊӽ紫ý. To mark the school’s 50th anniversary, Moehring penned ÐÔÊӽ紫ý: The ÐÔÊӽ紫ý: A History.
Moehring’s other works included Resort City in the Sunbelt (1989) and Reno, Las Vegas, and the Strip: A Tale of Three Cities (2014), among others. Moehring twice chaired the history department and helped launch the doctoral program.
He pioneered what eventually became the Harry Reid Endowed Chair for the History of the Intermountain West, the first endowed chair in the College of Liberal Arts. In 2008, Moehring received ÐÔÊӽ紫ý’s Harry Reid Silver State Research Award.
Moehring is survived by his wife, Christine Wiatrowski, a longtime employee of ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Libraries.
Sam Lieberman
A longtime advocate for higher education, Lieberman served on the board of the ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Alumni Association from 2000-08. He was instrumental in starting the College of Liberal Arts Alumni Chapter. He was named the college’s Alumnus of the Year in 2009. He also was a member of the College of Liberal Arts Dean’s Leadership Board.
As a regent, he represented District 5, which includes portions of Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, and unincorporated Clark County. He was chairing the ÐÔÊӽ紫ý Presidential Search Committee.
At the time of his death, he was the president of the board and lay leader of Congregation P’Nai Tikvah.
