Kevin McVay (College of Sciences Advising Center) and Charlene Gonzales (Career and Professional Development Office, Lee Business School), alongside colleagues Andrea Aduna from San Diego State University and Derek Furukawa from the University of Hawai驶i at M膩noa, recently presented at the in San Diego, California. Their session, 鈥淏ridges of Belonging: Leaning into Culture to Connect and Support Students,鈥 explored how advisors鈥 cultural affiliations can foster meaningful student connections that strengthen belonging, validation, and retention. Panelists from the Asian Pacific Islander and Desi American (APIDA) affinity group discussed the importance of culturally responsive advising amid evolving funding landscapes impacting programs such as AANAPISI, HSI, and PBI initiatives. The presentation highlighted strategies advisors can use to continue supporting and advocating for diverse student populations while strengthening community and connection within higher education.
