Our March talk will feature Tyler Dangerfield, assistant professor in the department of chemistry and biochemistry will be giving a talk titled Nature’s Original Gene Editors: Turning Ancient DNA into Modern Medicine

Abstract of the Talk: Deep within the DNA of almost every living thing lie ancient "hitchhikers"—segments of genetic code that have mastered the art of rewriting life's instructions over millions of years. While these elements are often viewed as mere parasites, my lab sees them as master architects. We study a specific element called R2, a natural "gene writer" that can insert itself into a genome with incredible precision, always hitting the exact same spot. By uncovering the secrets of how R2 finds its target and writes new information without making mistakes, we are learning how to build better tools for human medicine. Current gene-editing technologies can sometimes be "messy," causing accidental damage to healthy DNA. However, by borrowing nature’s own blueprints, we aim to develop a new generation of gene therapies—ones that work like a surgical laser to fix diseases like sickle cell anemia or cystic fibrosis safely and permanently. Join me to explore how an unlikely genetic parasite is laying the groundwork for the future of precision medicine.
