A safe workplace includes following fire and life safety best practices in offices, laboratories, storage rooms, and all other areas of the building. Keep all emergency exits, corridors, electrical panels, fire extinguishers, and sprinkler heads clear by at least 36 inches (3 ft). Ensure emergency equipment and signage remain visible and accessible at all times.

Appliances such as microwaves, coffee makers, and refrigerators must be plugged directly into building outlets. Extension cords are for temporary use only and may not be daisy-chained or used with multiple devices. Power strips and surge protectors must be UL-listed, equipped with overcurrent protection, and plugged directly into a wall outlet.

Space heaters must also be UL-listed, have tip-over shutoff, and be kept 36 inches (3ft) away from combustible materials. Maintain an 18 inch (1.5ft) clearance below sprinkler heads and ensure storage rooms remain organized and accessible.
